Company Profile
Genesis Bioventures, Inc. (GBI)
(previously BioLabs, Inc.), with its recent acquisition of 100% of
Biomedical Diagnostics, has shifted its
focus from being a holding company to becoming a full blown
operating company. In addition, GBI holds substantial equity
interest in Biotherapies, Inc. and Prion Developmental Laboratories,
Inc. (PDL).GBI's operational focus is to market the Mammastatin
Serum Assay (MSA), a diagnostic blood test recently introduced as a
screen for breast cancer risk. The test is available through the
Company's laboratory and ARUP Laboratories, in Salt Lake
City. Other
reference laboratories throughout the US will soon be announced.
There is no known direct competition for the MSA as there are no
other biological blood tests for breast cancer risk on the market
today. This, combined with the MSA's predictive potential, is
expected to draw significant interest and support from patients,
healthcare payors and health care providers.
On the Mad Cow front, GBI has recently announced that PDL is
currently in late-stage discussions with a European pharmaceutical
company to provide them with an easy-to-use, patents pending rapid
strip test for detecting Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), or
Mad Cow Disease.
The lateral flow strip test, developed by scientists at PDL, has
been tested at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in Cleveland,
Ohio and the Institute for Basic Research and Developmental
Disabilities (IBR) in Staten Island, New York. It is similar to a
home pregnancy test and will be used on-site using brain tissue
taking less than five minutes to complete with accurate, easily
interpreted results.

Developmental Laboratories, Inc. |
A private, development stage company in Maryland formed specifically to develop commercial diagnostic tests for neurodegenerative diseases, with an initial focus on prion diseases.

Product – Prion Diagnostic Assay is a blood or tissue test that is being developed to detect infectious diseases caused by prions, a novel infectious agent believed to be composed of protein. The initial format of this diagnostic test would be used to detect the early stages of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or "Mad Cow Disease," in cattle with the subsequent objective of developing a test for screening human blood products. At present, the only commercial method for detecting BSE in cattle is a post-mortem test using brain tissue, and there is currently no diagnostic test available for prion diseases in blood products.
Market – Prion diseases have become a major world health concern since the outbreak of "Mad Cow Disease" in the United Kingdom and the subsequent appearance in humans of a new variant of the fatal neurological disease known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (nvCJD). This prion disease is apparently transmitted to humans by eating meat or meat products from infected cattle. An Oxford University study reported in the August 2000 issue of Nature that as many as 136,000 humans could eventually become infected with
nvCJD.

Investment Criteria
Focus on leading biotechnology research that addresses unmet medical needs in selected healthcare sectors with high growth rates and substantial market opportunities. Primary emphasis is on innovative therapeutics or diagnostics in the areas of oncology
and neurology.
Support commercialization of innovative products with relatively short product development timelines.
Gain near-term profitability from rapid commercialization of diagnostic tests and therapies, while avoiding the extended timelines, high risk and significant capital requirements traditionally associated with biotech and pharmaceutical products.
Acquire a minimum 25% equity investment position in each portfolio company.
Officers/Directors/Advisors
Genesis Bioventures and its portfolio companies have extremely strong management and scientific
resources that range from a previous Chairman and CEO of Merck & Co., Inc. (John J. Horan) to the co-discoverer of the HIV virus, Robert C. Gallo.
