Company Profile
Genesis Bioventures, Inc. (GBI) (previously BioLabs, Inc.), with its recent acquisition of 100% of Biomedical Diagnostics, has shifted its focus from being a holding company to becoming a full blown operating company. In addition, GBI holds substantial equity interest in Biotherapies, Inc. and Prion Developmental Laboratories, Inc. (PDL).

GBI's operational focus is to market the Mammastatin Serum Assay (MSA), a diagnostic blood test recently introduced as a screen for breast cancer risk. The test is available through the Company's laboratory and ARUP Laboratories, in Salt Lake The March 2003 issue of IVD Technology contains an article about GBI's MSA, titled "Enhancing Risk Assessment". Click here to read the full text.City. Other reference laboratories throughout the US will soon be announced. There is no known direct competition for the MSA as there are no other biological blood tests for breast cancer risk on the market today. This, combined with the MSA's predictive potential, is expected to draw significant interest and support from patients, healthcare payors and health care providers.

On the Mad Cow front, GBI has recently announced that PDL is currently in late-stage discussions with a European pharmaceutical company to provide them with an easy-to-use, patents pending rapid strip test for detecting Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), or Mad Cow Disease.

The lateral flow strip test, developed by scientists at PDL, has been tested at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in Cleveland, Ohio and the Institute for Basic Research and Developmental Disabilities (IBR) in Staten Island, New York. It is similar to a home pregnancy test and will be used on-site using brain tissue taking less than five minutes to complete with accurate, easily interpreted results.

Biotech Portfolio Companies
Biotherapies, Inc.  |  Biomedical Diagnostics, LLC  |  Prion Developmental Laboratories, Inc.

Biotherapies Inc.
A private company in Michigan that is developing Mammastatin, a proprietary protein technology that could offer a novel therapeutic approach to the long-term control of breast cancer, without the side effects of traditional chemotherapy. .

Product – Mammastatin is a member of a family of naturally occurring human proteins that have potential applications as new cancer therapies and diagnostics. This protein occurs in its active form in normal breast tissue but is absent in most breast cancer patients. Mammastatin Replacement Therapy has been used for the treatment of late-stage breast cancer with FDA permission since late 1996 on a limited compassionate therapy basis.

Market – With over 180,000 new cases of breast cancer being diagnosed in the U.S. each year, the potential market is enormous for a therapeutic protein as an effective breast cancer treatment. Breast cancer diagnostics and therapeutics represent a $10 billion industry worldwide. Related products from this platform technology are under development for prostate, ovarian and colon cancer.

Biomedical Diagnostics, LLC
Previously a joint venture between Biotherapies and GBI, Biomedical Diagnostics is now (since December 2001) one hundred percent owned by GBI.  Biomedical has developed the Mammastatin Serum Assay (MSA) for breast cancer risk assessment. Biomedical also has the rights to develop, market and distribute diagnostic screening assays that are derived from this proprietary technology to assess a person's risk for prostate and ovarian cancer.

Product – MSA is a blood test for determining breast cancer risk through the detection and quantification of mammastatin levels. The MSA test could be a simple blood test that may detect breast cancer risk and permit earlier diagnosis of breast cancer.

Market – In the United States alone, there are over 80,000,000 women per year who potentially could benefit from having a Mammastatin Serum Assay done as part of their routine health care. Detection of risk for breast, prostate and ovarian cancer, prior to clinical diagnosis of the disease, could allow preventative intervention and enhance patient survival.

Prion Developmental Laboratories, Inc.
A private, development stage company in Maryland formed specifically to develop commercial diagnostic tests for neurodegenerative diseases, with an initial focus on prion diseases.

Product – Prion Diagnostic Assay is a blood or tissue test that is being developed to detect infectious diseases caused by prions, a novel infectious agent believed to be composed of protein. The initial format of this diagnostic test would be used to detect the early stages of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or "Mad Cow Disease," in cattle with the subsequent objective of developing a test for screening human blood products. At present, the only commercial method for detecting BSE in cattle is a post-mortem test using brain tissue, and there is currently no diagnostic test available for prion diseases in blood products.

Market – Prion diseases have become a major world health concern since the outbreak of "Mad Cow Disease" in the United Kingdom and the subsequent appearance in humans of a new variant of the fatal neurological disease known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (nvCJD). This prion disease is apparently transmitted to humans by eating meat or meat products from infected cattle. An Oxford University study reported in the August 2000 issue of Nature that as many as 136,000 humans could eventually become infected with nvCJD.
