BioLabs, Inc.
Our Take
We maintain that Genesis Bioventures, or BioLabs as they are still known to those of us who have been committed to this company for a couple of years, offers the most explosive opportunity for stock appreciation that we have ever seen.

Presently, the company has interests in two areas of biotech, both of which offer potential for dramatic impact globally. About breast cancer we don't have to say much. The harsh reality is that one in eight women can expect to get it.

BioLabs' Biomedical Diagnostics is on the verge of launching a blood test, the Mammastatin Serum Assay, into the US healthcare market. This diagnostic test, by detecting Mammastatin levels, has enormous potential to identify women at risk of developing breast cancer or  who have breast cancer.

And early detection is the key to breast cancer survival.

Do you think there is a single woman who will not regularly go for a simple blood test if it can tell her:
a) She is at risk of developing breast cancer; keep on testing regularly;
b) She has breast cancer at the very beginning stages, early treatment will most likely save her life; or
c) She is at low risk of developing breast cancer in the near future; have peace of mind (initial statistics show the MSA has a negative predictive value of 97%).

Mammastatin also has therapeutic applications for which FDA testing  is expected to resume in the near future. The theory is that if women without Mammastatin get breast cancer, what would adding the Mammastatin protein do for women who already have breast cancer? FDA trials are not complete, but several patients with extremely advanced breast cancer (stage IV), whose cases were regarded as hopeless, were kept alive for years with Mammastatin treatment.

In the area of neurology, Mad Cow Disease (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy or BSE), or as it is known in humans, new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, has received a lot of press attention lately. This fatal, brain-wasting disease has cost the European cattle farming community dearly. Over 2 million head of cattle are being destroyed and the European Union has set aside $1 billion to deal with the crisis, which includes mandatory testing.

Once again, the tests available today only identifies BSE-stricken cows in the late stages, and after they have been slaughtered.

The Holy Grail among BSE researchers, though, is a cheap and simple blood test, like the one used to detect HIV infection. This is what GBI's portfolio company, Prion Developmental Laboratories is working on. And leading the scientific team is Dr. Robert C. Gallo, the discoverer of the HIV virus, the most referenced scientist in the world between 1980 and 1990 and the author of more than 1,100 scientific publications.

If anyone can develop this test, it's Gallo and his team.

All in all, BioLabs is just a great company to be involved with. Millions of lives stand to be saved by breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and prevention, made possible by Biotherapies' discovery of the Mammastatin protein. In light of near-panic fear that Mad Cow Disease will turn into the next HIV scourge, the international farming community is going to spend billions per year on BSE testing.

Shareholders of BioLabs get a double bonus; they participate in improving the quality of millions of lives while owning stock with tremendous upside potential.
